Shire of Esperance urges you to Fight the Bite

The Shire of Esperance Health services would like to remind its community and travellers that despite mosquito trapping this spring indicating a lower number of mosquitoes, some of the mosquitoes identified have the potential to carry diseases such as  Ross River Virus (RRV) and Barmah Forest Virus (BFV).

The Health Department of WA through their quarterly reporting identified 3 early mosquito borne cases in Esperance for October this year. This included 2 cases of RRV and one case of BFV.  The Climate outlook for December 2021 to February 2022 indicates warmer days and nights across much of the state, also conductive to mosquito breeding and possible mosquito-borne virus activity.

Protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes by adopting the following simple measures:

• Avoid outdoor exposure particularly around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
• Wear protective (long, loose-fitting, light coloured) clothing when outdoors
• Apply a personal repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin evenly to exposed skin
• Empty or cover any standing water around the home or holiday accommodation to reduce mosquito breeding
• Ensure insect screens are installed and remain in good condition
• Use mosquito nets or mosquito-proof tents when camping or sleeping outdoors
• Ensure infants and children are adequately protected against mosquito bites, preferably with suitable clothing, bed nets or other forms of insect screening.
